The Most Rev’d Henry Chukwudum Ndukuba

The Most Rev’d Henry Chukwudum Ndukuba was born on July 18, 1961, to Mr. and Mrs. Silas O. Ndukuba of Ogberuru in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.

He attended Bishop Shanahan College, Orlu, and obtained his West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1978. While in secondary school, he gave his life to Christ as a teenager in 1977, marking a new beginning for him. From 1979 to 1980, he worked at the Kano State Library, Ministry of Education. It was in Kano that he received the call into the ministry of the gospel. Subsequently, he was sent to the Theological College of Northern Nigeria (TCNN), Bukuru, where he studied from 1980 to 1984 and obtained a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.) degree in 1984. He completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kano State from 1984 to 1985.

He was ordained into the Holy Order as a deacon in 1984 and as a priest in 1985. He served at St. George’s Anglican Church, Borupai, Kano, before being sent to teach at St. Francis of Assisi Theological College, Wusasa, Zaria, in 1985. He served in various capacities and eventually became the acting Dean of the college.

In July 1996, he was appointed Archdeacon of Kano to help stabilize the Diocese of Kano after a turbulent period. His zeal for the Lord and passion for missions were evident. By July 1999, he was requested to return as Dean of St. Francis College, Wusasa. However, in September 1999, he was elected the Bishop of Gombe. Nineteen years later, he was elected Archbishop of Jos Ecclesiastical Province and was presented on January 12, 2018. On September 24, 2019, the Episcopal Synod elected him as the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion.

He obtained an M.A. in Systematic Theology from Durham University, England, in 1990, and an M.A. in Christian Education from Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey, USA, in 1996. He distinguished himself as a scholar, winning the 1996 John Havran’s Princeton Prize for Christian Education.

Henry Ndukuba is a servant of God and His people. He has received the grace to teach, preach, and stand out as an evangelist and missioner. His episcopacy has been a blessing to the Church of God. He serves as the Chairman of the Liturgy and Spirituality Committee of the Church of Nigeria, overseeing the production of the Annual Bible Study Manual, the Daily Fountain Devotional, the Sunday School Manual, and the Youth Devotional. His committee also produced the New Book of Common Prayer and Hymnal for the Church of Nigeria. Additionally, he chairs the Church of Nigeria Historical Records and Artifacts Committee, which is responsible for documenting and preserving historical records and artifacts of the Church, as well as establishing an archive for the Church.

As the Bishop of Gombe, the Anglican Church grew from 18 congregations to over 150 churches. Through his humble service of faith, church planting, evangelism, and discipleship, the Diocese has experienced tremendous growth. Raising lay and pastoral leadership remains a core part of his ministry.

He has worked with communities and leaders in Gombe State to promote peaceful coexistence and community development. To sustain the ministry of the gospel in the state, he collaborated with Luke Partnership, Nigeria Bible Translation Trust, and Seed Company to produce literary materials and translate the Bible and Jesus Film into 10 of the 17 tribal languages in the state.

He serves as the Board of Trustees (BOT) Chairman of LIST, a registered organization focused on translating the Bible, Jesus Film, and other Christian literary materials into Nigerian languages, especially minority languages. His passion for missions continues, knowing that there are still many lands to conquer. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Yet, with faith in the Lord of the harvest, all things are possible.

Furthermore, he is a sound Biblical scholar, teacher, master liturgist, pastor, and accomplished evangelist. His deep love for Jesus Christ and passion for the Word of God are evident in his ministry. He is also a prolific writer.

Archbishop Henry is married to Mrs. Angela E. Ndukuba (née Okoro), an accomplished servant of God, educationist, and devoted mother in God’s Church. They are blessed with six children, a grandson, and two granddaughters
